Halloween

Here are my kids costumes this year.
I can not believe that both kids are looking at the camera AND smiling. I won't even wait get an actual "Halloween" day picture.
C is Lucy Little (If you don't know who/what this is, check out www.hulu.com search tv shows for "The Littles" and watch an episode. I loved the Littles as a kid. I think it is pretty cool that my kids do too.) B is a monkey. It is VERY fitting.

God's provision

I am amazed on a daily basis how God prepares us for things before we realize we are being prepared. It has been an amazing week. I don't know if you are familiar with the Awana program but it has changed my life on more than one occasion now. I was saved through this program. Okay so back to God's provision. I am in a bible study this term with an amazing lady. I am always "upset" that I never get out of bible studies what everyone else gets. The same goes for the sermon's on Sunday. But, God always uses these things to show me something. This time is no different. It all began over two years ago. I had this feeling that I wanted to read my bible cover to cover. Sounds silly. I have read pieces of the bible but never the whole bible. I know that it will take me closer to five years than 1 or 2. But I resisted. I don't know enough to read my bible. I never get what everyone else gets. I met with an amazing lady and asked her how she studied. She is an incredible blessing to me and I am saddened that I no longer see her b/c I have moved to a different Community Group. After that I began reading my bible. I am still in Genesis but I am plugging right along. As I am reading I am feeling that God is calling me to something. (I still don't know what this is. For over a year now I have felt like he has something for me. That he is preparing me for something so I am faithfully praying and trying to be patient.) So the next step, I "complain" God I just don't know how to read the bible. And he leads me to a study of Ruth that teaches me how to study the bible. It's funny really. Most everyone I know reads Ruth and gets loyalty, faithfulness. I get that I need to be a blessing to others. Then I do a study in the spring called Crazy Love with the pastor of my church. The entire time I am feeling that God has some "mission" for me. I keep praying for clarity and patience. I really wish I knew what it was. I still don't. Fall comes and it is time to choose what I am going to do on Wednesday nights. I feel like I need to be in Awanas. I feel like I need to be with 9 year old girls. But I am afraid. I don't know enough about Jesus to lead these young women to the Lord. And, yet I feel like I REALLY need to do a study. "God I just don't know what study I want to do. I just don't know if I am up for anything." And he leads me again to take a study under Mrs. Jordan. We are doing a study of 1 Peter. Now, lets take a detour for a minute. This last Sunday in community group Mr. Entz told of a parable..The parable of the 18th camel. It was a precursor to a study on spiritual gifts. He said to each of us in the room that we are the 18th camel. We may not do something that is noticed while there but we are essential to the workings of the church. Hum, me an 18th camel. I never thought of it that way. But, maybe he is right. I thought on this for a few days. I am still trying to figure out what "ministry" God has for me. I am not a great bible teacher. I am not great at scripture memory. I am not great at missions or evangelism. I don't feel great at a lot of things. But someone said something in that meeting that I have thought about. "Just because your spiritual gift is not this does not mean that at some point in your life God will not lead you to use that gift. And then, the next thing happened. I am sitting in the living room working on my study reading 1 Peter 2. I read 1 Peter 2:9 "but you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out darkness into his wonderful light. "

And I get.. That I am chose, that I am in the priesthood, that my declaring praises of God will lead others out of the darkness and into His light. Not my declaring but God being praised.
And I wonder, what does it mean that I am a royal priesthood?
So I look up the cross references for this verse and I read:

22 For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own. 1 Samuel 12:22

6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." exodus 19:6

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. Deuteronomy 7:6

18to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.' Acts 26:18

And I am sitting pondering what this means and how it fits my life. Charlie walks in. It is 10 o'clock. And she says, "Mommy, my Sparks CD says that if I want to know how to get to heaven I have to ask my parents. So, Mommy, how do I get to heaven?" How can I send her back to bed after that?

And every inadequacy comes rushing to me. I can't do this. I don't know what to say. She is so young. How can this possibly be right? And I hear Mr. Entz say that sometime the 18th camel is someone just sitting next to you. And I hear 1 peter 2:9 that I am chosen, a holy priesthood." I take a deep breath and pray on the way to Charlie's room that God would put the right words into my mouth.

I pull Charlie into my arms and we begin our conversation.

Charlie what does God say you are?

I am a special gift from God and I am a sinner.

What does it mean to be a sinner?

It means that I make bad choices without Jesus's help, like disobeying and hitting my brother and being mean to him.

Why are you a sinner?

Well Mom you know the story of Adam and Eve. Well, they ate this apple and they disobeyed God and because they disobeyed God. We all sin. We have bee stings and bug bites. We are tired and hungry. We get sick and we die. They disobeyed God and they couldn't be with them in the Garden anymore.

Who is a sinner?

Everyone. You and me and everyone.

Who was the only perfect person? The only person who never sinned?

That's easy. It was Jesus.

Why did Jesus come to EArth?

He came to die on the cross for my sins.

What does that mean?

He died so I could be with God and Jesus in heaven.

But, lots of people died on the cross. What makes Jesus so different?

He is God's son. Oh, and he raised again on the third day.

But how do you get to heaven?

I believe in God and Jesus just like the bible says "For God so loved the world that he sent his only son Jesus that who ever believes in him will not die but have eternal life." Right mom?

So I panic. She seems to have the right answers. But how can this be true? She is so young. I know that she has to pray to accept Christ into her heart. But, I can't remember that prayer.

Dear Jesus,

I am a sinner. I know that you sent your son Jesus to die on the cross. I believe that he rose on the third day. Please forgive me of my sins. I ask that you come into my heart and save me. Thank you Jesus. Amen (She adds "God I love you so much.")

She says "amen, I love you mommy, thank you for telling me how to get to heaven. Good night." She rolls over and goes to sleep.

And, me...I deal with every emotion. I still think she is too young. I don't know if I did it right (I know that it is all Jesus but still.)

So tonight I ask her, how do you get to heaven.

By following God's way

How do you follow God's way?

By following Jesus and God, by doing the right thing, by following the authority that God gives us like obeying our parents. God's way is Jesus. Read the bible.

I don't know, but at least she is on the right track.

National Play dough day

What do you do on a Saturday when the little one is sick? You find mommy's post it flags and use them for whiskers. That is what you do. No, maybe you....

You make play dough birthday cakes. We have a bowl of colorful shape buttons and small flowers that the kids like to use to make cakes. This week we also added a box of birthday candles. If you don't want your kids to use candles you can always cut pipe cleaners into smaller pieces or use colored toothpicks. And, by the way, Happy National Play Dough Day!!!
Oh, and the kittens used my post it markers to make whiskers. I love their imaginations.

A brantley story

Wednesday night as I was putting my kids to bed I was griping at Charlie (as usual). "Charlie your dirty clothes belong in the hamper not on your floor." I go into B's room to tuck him in and he is pulling his laundry out of his hamper and throwing it on the floor. He is laughing hysterically. "Mommy, clothes on floor." I am sure that I will find this display of humor great one day. That night I did not find it funny.

The next layout was our testimony. Mine is long. "I have always thought that a testimony was more than the moment when I accepted Christ. My testimony starts before I was born: God’s hand has always been in my life. I was born to an unwed teenage mother. Her parents were strong Christian people. My dad (at the time of my birth) was an alcoholic. He says he was on the downward swoop of getting into the bottom of a bottle. I was blessed enough to have an amazing mom. She is one of the bravest and strongest women I have ever met. When I was 4 months old she left me with my grandparents because she did not feel that I was safe wi

th her. She went to Oklahoma for a while trying to make a better life for us with the intentions of coming back for me. She did somewhere b/w 3 and 4 (I think). When I was four we moved with my Uncle Bobby to Little Rock. My mom met John. They had my sister and were pregnant with my brother when they got married. John adopted me. I remember telling the Judge when I was six that this was my daddy and he loved me. J

ohn was very convincing. In the middle of 2nd grade we moved with John to Japan. He was in the Air Force. While in Japan John showed his true colors. He was an alcoholic and a drug addict (marijuana). He became to me very emotionally abusive. He always compared me to my sister. Everything anyone did was my fault (and yes, I had a few of those myself. I was not perfect). I spent most of my time grounded. I was grounded to the yard. I could watch everyone play but not join in. I was grounded to the house. I could not go outside. I was grounded to my room. Isolated. I was grounded to my bed. This was the one that I HATED. I had to sit on my bed perfectly still for hours! I could only get up to go to the bathroom once an hour. I could only leave my roo

m to go the bathroom or eat and then it was right back there. I couldn’t lay down. He repeatedly told me that my sister and brother were better. Nothing I did was ever good enough. My mother was great. She did her very best in the situation and got us out of it as soon as she could safely. At nine, the abuse was the worst. It wasn't’ physical No broken bones, no bruises. One of the Baptist churches on base had a bus ministry and I was attended their Awana’s program. I was saved January 19, 1987 in the middle of a basketball court just after game time. So there is my testimony right? Not in the least. God had a plan. When we returned to the states I was a different person. This person was shy. This person never felt like she fit in. This person began her struggle with depression and loneliness. At 11 my parents decided to get divorced. This was a tough time b/c I had to go to John’s for visitation. During this time he and a distant cousin had me convinced that my mother “abandoned me” when I was a baby. John gave me just enough of the truth that I had no idea who to believe. Do I believe John who use to spank me when he thought I lied or do I believe my mother who says “You have to make your own decision. I can’t tell you what to believe?” It was very difficult. It was not until I began working on the album before I learned more of the truth concerning this “abandonment” (And, no she did not). God has a plan.

“ 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you," de

clares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile."” Jeremiah 29:11-14

And so, his plan continued. When I was 12, a distant cousin of my mothers (Joan) was in the hospital in Springfield, Mo. My aunt Brenda (Uncle Stan’s wife--Stan is Doug’s brother) was a nurse and noticed that she was from Harrison, Ar and that her last name was the same as my mom’s (when she was with my dad). Brenda asked if she knew Cathy (my mom). Through this, I met Brenda and Stan and was shown a few pictures from times before I remember that I knew some of my Dad’s family. When I was 13 the school hosted a father daughter dance. Papa said he would go with me but I just wanted to go with my dad. I wrote a letter to Brenda basically asking how someone could have a daughter somewhere out there and not even care. She in time gave it to my dad. After some time he contacted my mom. (This is another story)...Now, I have two dad’s. What do I do. During this time in my life I tried out for Cheerleading lost, won, lost again. I began a spiral of depression that was deep. By 15, I was at a crossroads. I felt that I just couldn’t handle life. I sat in my bedroom with three things in front of me...mom’s migraine pills, grandpa’s hand gun and a telephone. I remember telling my mother over and over that she was crazy for keeping me. I had ruined her life. I remember crying out to God. I just can’t handle the loneliness. I can’t handle feeling alone and unwanted. I couldn’t handle the teasing at school. I just wanted it to end. “Call your Aunt Sharon.” I can’t call my Aunt Sharon, it’s 3 am, I am not allowed to call long distance. I don’t want to wake her... “Call her.” So I called. She told me that she would take care of everything and that I was to go to bed and she would call me in the morning. I went to bed. She called in the morning. She told me to go to school and we would talk in the afternoon. I went to school. My mom came sometime that morning a

nd checked me out for the day. Sherry had saved my life. She called mom. Mom got me into a Christian counselor and I made it through high school. Through the years I have battled depression. There have been some good years and some dark years. And yet the same is true. God is forever faithful. HE has always been there. Through everything. I have never been at t

hat point again. To this day, I know he is with me.

In college, I was given a poem that makes me understand the loneliness a little better.

“I made her a little more lonesome than she would like to be... Only because I need for her to learn and depend on Me. I know her heart. I know that if I had not made her like this, She would go her own chosen way And forget Me...her Creator.

Every step in my life I have felt God with me. I have felt his provision. I have felt his protection. I have heard his voice. Sometime that voice was in words. Sometimes his voice was in events. Sometimes his voice was through the wisdom of others. Sometimes his voice was through his word but ALL the time I have felt him with me. Even when I was in the depths of depression I knew without a doubt that he was right there with me. I knew that his plan was so much greater than mine could ever be. Even now, I feel that God has something Great that he is doing through me. I have no idea what it is, or if I will ever know but he has a plan for me. He has always had a plan for me. "

Bricktown, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I love to just do crazy things with my kids. Saturday was the perfect time to do this. I LOVE scavenger hunts and walking, and I LOVE Bricktown. Dusty on the other hand does not like any of these things. He had to work this weekend. We did not have anything special planned because he was at work, so the kids and I went to Bricktown with a clip board and a camera. We had the BEST time! Here is our list of thing to find... a boat, a buffalo, a bridge, a horse, a statue, a baseball player, Sonic, a bench, a trolley, a waterfall, a fountain, and guitar. We have added a few things to our list for next time: a person with a camera, a duck, a pigeon, and animal prints. We rode the trolley (which is free now). We rode the blue line. The kids just had the best time. It was a great day. We ate dinner at Sonic.

Brantley Birthday

I am feeling really guilty that it took me this long to post this...I really do love you B.
Happy birthday little guy! He had a great day. He woke up to presents... New books, a tool set, and baseball glove. He is so funny. He throws the ball with his glove and catches it with his hand. Then, Dusty took him to Bass Pro and the Route 66 park. He had a great day. I can't believe that 2 years have passed.
